With the help of the emergent consulting approach utilized by 3DSE, we were quickly able to jointly design a process and organizational structure for the development of active medical devices. This new structure will significantly reduce our development times.

B. Braun is one of the world’s leading providers of medical technology and pharmaceutical products and services. With a workforce of 61,583 employees and total revenue of EUR 6.8 billion in the 2017 business year, the company’s Hospital Care and Avitum divisions started an optimization program for the research and development of active medical products to manage the significant growth the company has been experiencing in this area. The main objective of the optimization program was to reduce development times and increase customer satisfaction. Another goal was to merge the previously separate development departments at the two divisions into a single powerful unit.

During two successive initiatives, B. Braun and consultants from 3DSE designed harmonized development processes and then worked to structure the new development organization.

The development processes were designed in four consecutive stages: design of the process landscape, the subprocesses, and the methods and tools, followed by pilot testing and process roll-outs. Participants were particularly impressed by the format, which was marked by extensive cooperation and continuous alternation between teamwork, plenary sessions and expert reviews by a jury. The result speaks for itself: the R&D process landscape for the entire product life cycle along with detailed process charts for advance development and product design were completed within two months.

The key benefits offered by the new process model are the clear depictions of cross-functional cooperation and the references to all relevant regulatory requirements relating to product development. The new R&D organization was developed in three phases: Design of alternative organizational forms, selection and detailed further development of the most promising alternatives, and implementation of the new R&D organization. Participants here expressed particular praise for the methods used to promote creative collaboration between staff from different development departments, as well as the effective leadership displayed within the tried-and-tested 3DSE processes. This aspect was especially apparent during the final presentation to the Steering Committee.

“With the help of the emergent consulting approach utilized by 3DSE, we were quickly able to jointly design a process and organizational structure for the development of active medical devices. This new structure will significantly reduce our development times,” states Michael Reindl, Vice President Automated Infusion Systems and Head of Development Active Medical Devices at B. Braun Melsungen AG. B. Braun is currently implementing the new structures. “In particular, the modification instruments introduced by 3DSE have simplified process design and optimization and made both extremely effective,” adds Reindl.
