Harmonization of an architecture management framework across product categories and regions to leverage synergies in product management, product development and production

With a turnover of €15.9 billion and 63,000 employees, BSH Hausgeräte GmbH is the leading manufacturer of household appliances in Europe. BSH produces refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, ovens and stoves at 39 locations worldwide, placing the co

BSH’s product portfolio is particularly complex. In addition to the different product categories and the various brands such as Bosch, Siemens and Neff, BSH also aims to meet specific regional customer requirements around the world. To remain globally competitive despite increasing competition, BSH wants to be able to react quickly to changing market requirements and at the same time exploit the synergies between the brands and the various markets. To this end, a process known as PACT was developed back in 2012 to ensure the coordination of local product management with global product development and production. PACT stands for program-, product- and productionarchitecture.

New organizational framework conditions and the complexity of the organization ensured that the PACT methods were adapted to specific regions and product lines over time. This and the increasing proportion of electronic and digital components in the product made it necessary to revise PACT. BSH opted for support from 3DSE for the revision, which was able to make valuable contributions with both its process expertise and its architectural experience.

“Developing a standardized approach is a major challenge for a global company like BSH, because different perspectives, mentalities and regional requirements have to be reconciled” says Ralf Lohmann, “3DSE provides support by developing specific content with small groups as well as ensuring a consistent overall picture in regular consolidation workshops.” The revised framework provides a uniform procedure for identifying the same or similar customer requirements between products in different regions and thus deriving modular and standardized technical solutions in product development and production. This strikes the right balance between efficiency and customer orientation. The pragmatic process description as well as the defined templates and tools make the framework immediately operational so that it can be used in all business units.
